January 23, 2025

Nominations for the 97th Oscars were revealed Thursday morning, showcasing a broad and unpredictable awards race. Among the most talked-about films are Conclave and Anora, which brought unique storytelling and artistic visions to the forefront.

Anora, directed by Sean Baker, earned six nominations, including Best Picture, Writing (Original Screenplay), Film Editing, and Acting nods for both Mikey Madison (Actress in a Leading Role) and Yura Borisov (Actor in a Supporting Role). This Palme d’Or winner has been celebrated for its visually arresting style and emotional depth.

Conclave, with eight nominations, also emerged as a major contender. Adapted from Robert Harris’ novel and scripted by Peter Straughan, the film's tension-filled story is supported by standout performances, including Ralph Fiennes (Actor in a Leading Role) and Isabella Rossellini (Actress in a Supporting Role). Its nominations span Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and more.

On a bittersweet note, Angelina Jolie's performance in Maria did not secure her a nomination. However, the film remains a standout in discussions of this year's cinematic achievements, particularly for its exquisite cinematography by Ed Lachman, which captured the raw humanity of Jolie’s character.

This year’s Oscars celebrate a dynamic mix of styles and genres, ensuring an exciting awards season ahead.
