‘Conclave’ Trailer: Ralph Fiennes’ Selection Of New Pope Complicated By Conspiracy In Thriller From ‘All Quiet’ Oscar Winner Edward Berger
July 18, 2024Focus Features released the first trailer for "Conclave," a papal thriller directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger ("All Quiet on the Western Front") and starring two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes ("The Menu"). The film, which is anticipated to be a major awards contender, will premiere in select theaters on November 1st and expand nationwide on November 8th.
Adapted from Robert Harris's book, "Conclave" was penned by Peter Straughan. The story delves into one of the most secretive and ancient rituals in the world – the selection of a new Pope. After the unexpected death of the beloved Pope, Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is entrusted with overseeing this clandestine process. As the Catholic Church's most influential leaders converge and are sequestered within the Vatican, Lawrence uncovers a conspiracy and a secret that threatens to undermine the very foundation of the Church.
The cast also features Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Brían F. O’Byrne, Carlos Diehz, Merab Ninidze, Thomas Loibl, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini.
Edward Berger previously achieved international acclaim for his work on "All Quiet on the Western Front," a Netflix adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's iconic World War I novel. The film received nine Oscar nominations and won awards for Best International Feature, Original Score, Cinematography, and Production Design. Berger recently directed "The Ballad of a Small Player," a psychological thriller starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton for Netflix. He is also developing a new installment in the Jason Bourne franchise for Universal, with plans to direct.
