October 17, 2025

Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Marton Csokas (The Luminaries), and Merlin Sandmeyer (Die Discounter) have joined the cast of the upcoming German-language drama Black Gold. The six-part series comes from Justin Koch, who also serves as head writer, and is produced by Kinescope Film, part of the Swiss Studios group.

Set in a quiet village near Lüneburg Heath, Black Gold follows the chaos that erupts after the discovery of oil beneath the countryside. Christie and Csokas star as English prospectors Emma and Tyler Robertson, whose arrival upends the lives of the local community. As the wealthy Pape family moves to seize control of the oil fields from the Lamberts, a family of farmers transformed by sudden fortune, long-buried tensions rise to the surface.

The ensemble cast also includes Harriet Herbig-Matten (Maxton Hall), Aaron Hilmer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Tom Wlaschiha (Game of Thrones), Lena Urzendowsky (How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)), Jessica Schwarz (The Canoe of Manitu), Henny Reents (North by Northwest), Slavko Popadić (Krank Berlin), and Liliom Lewald (Oderbruch).

Two-time Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer will compose the score alongside violinist Aleksey Igudesman, bringing a distinct musical voice to the series.

Black Gold is produced in association with FilmNation Entertainment, 4film, and Hero Square, with Fifth Season handling international sales and Germany’s NDR and ARD commissioning. Production is supported by several regional German film funds and the Hungarian National Film Office.
