Maika Monroe & Chloe Okuno Re-Team For Horror Flick ‘Brides’
October 30, 2024Maika Monroe, known for her role in Longlegs, is set to star in Chloe Okuno's upcoming film, Brides.
Currently in pre-production, Brides is expected to begin filming in the spring of 2025. Okuno will direct the project based on her own screenplay.
FilmNation Entertainment will introduce international buyers to the film at the upcoming American Film Market, while UTA Independent Film Group is handling global and domestic distribution rights.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s Italy, the story follows Sally Bishop (Monroe) and her husband as they travel to a secluded villa following Sally's nervous breakdown. The villa’s enigmatic owner, a mysterious count, develops a peculiar fascination with Sally—only to face unexpected challenges when her “feminist chaos” disrupts his violent and pristine world of vampire brides.
The film is described as a “gothic, glamorous, and gory” narrative that seeks to “flip Bram Stoker’s narrative on its head, exploring the struggle between societal repression and carnal desire.” Monroe previously collaborated with Okuno on the 2022 film Watcher. The project is being produced by Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu under the Likely Story banner.
“Brides is set to redefine the horror genre with Chloe Okuno’s unique blend of feminist themes and gory visuals,” said Bregman. “The script is dynamic and unsettling in all the best ways. Chloe always brings such dread and complexity to her characters, and we can’t wait to work with her and Maika to bring Sally to life—or to un-death, as the case may be.”
The deal was negotiated by James Janowitz at Pryor Cashman, with UTA representing Chloe Okuno. Okuno is represented by UTA and Peter Sample at Jackoway Austen, while Monroe is represented by WME, Management 360, Felker Toczek, and imPRint PR.
